RVINEWS 3/16/09 - NTP Distribution gains market share in struggling industry.
WILSONVILLE, OR. -- It's been a tough year for many companies, and NTP Distribution is no exception as the RV market continues to contract. However, the wholesale distribution company is doing well relative to its competition, said Mark Jenson, vice president of marketing.
"We are doing really well in terms of moving forward and gaining market share," he explained. "As last year wound down, we made a decision not to participate in the recession. As a result, we set out to gain significant market share in a hurry. We focused on the pipeline and started beating bushes to gather as much business as possible."
For the past 10 to 15 years, NTP has taken their system for inventory management, operational efficiency and technological enhancement to RV dealers across the country, but primarily in the Pacific Northwest. For some reason, Jensen said, the message has a particular resonance this year, in this economy.
"While some dealers embraced our message years ago, others weren't as focused on parts and accessories. But now, with everything else going on in the economy, our pitch has become much more effective," said Jensen. "Dealers recognize that developing strong aftermarket sales is the right thing to do and it is one area of their operation where they can continue to see growth."
While new unit sales might be down, there are millions of current RV owners who have no intention of giving up on the RV lifestyle and their outdoor activities, he added. "People will continue to own RVs and they will continue to use them. As they do, they will need to maintain, upgrade and resupply their RVs on a regular basis," said Jensen. "Because, for many dealers, parts, accessories and service are doing better than unit sales, we have been able to take advantage of some opportunities and enjoy some success."
NTP completed their annual dealer buying show a few weeks ago in Austin, Texas. Nobody was planning on sales going through the roof, and the staff took a realistic approach to sales, said Jensen. The company focused on getting new customers to the show and selling NTP as a long-term partner to meet a dealership's supply needs.
"In the past year or so, we have opened our Dallas distribution center and added sales staff on the east coast," he explained. "As a result, we've been able to get quite a few new dealers in those markets and we are making significant progress in penetrating other accounts."
Because of the company's historical roots in the west coast, Jensen said the firm does enjoy a stronger presence in that region. However, the down economy has forced the closure of several dealerships in that region which have cut into NTP's sales. Even so, the gains the company is making in acquiring new accounts and expanding existing dealers has made up for those declines, he added.
"We've been so pleased with our progress in the past year that we have begun planning for a new distribution center," said Jensen, who declined to discuss specific locations other than to say they were looking at three or four possibilities.
"We are looking to launch a new location early next year," he said.
That will be the crowning achievement in a year of achievements, he added. "In the past year, we have brought our entire product portfolio online and made it available as a free service our customers can tap in ordering products. By April we will have completed a major update on all our operating systems and online ordering processes."
NTP created an online parts breakdown service that has proven to be very successful in bringing more repair facilities on board, said Jensen.
The system allows technicians to look at an appliance or other product and explode the image to locate and identify the individual components. That makes it possible for technicians to quickly identify the parts they need and then click right into NTP's ordering system. To ensure they can readily supply dealerships and service centers, Jensen said NTP has made a significant increase in their parts inventory.
"It's the right thing to do in an environment when repair services are becoming even more important," he added.
"Everything we are doing is working for us," he explained. "What's frustrating us is the financial tidal wave that is running over the economy right now. But, once the economy turns around, I know we are well positioned for some tremendous growth over the next few years."
