No End Cap Is Ever The Same.
John Feasel

In the SMART Team’s travels of doing store sets we see an endless array of end cap displays, and no end cap is ever the same.  What is the purpose of an end cap?  What do I do with all of this empty space?  It’s just a left over space for left over merchandise, right?  Nope!  This area is prime real estate in the merchandising world, and can be one of the most fun to utilize.  End cap space can be used for seasonal marketing – those items that are most needed, or more fun during winter, spring, fall, summer times – or for to catch the customers on the way out of the aisles with impulse purchases.  When looking at your end caps make sure each item has a home on your aisle; that end caps aren’t used to house overstock and that you change them out at least once a quarter.  Each end cap needs to reach out and grab your customer’s attention and help increase your sales.  Have fun with it!!  Merchandise for a holiday, or promote one particular vendor or theme.  There is a variety of product out there that can represent all seasons; for items and ideas on this quarters new end caps please contact your NTP Distribution sales consultant today!

Storing Your RV - Exterior Tips
Dan Summerill

As I write this, most of the country is dealing with high humidity, sweltering heat, and dying lawns. Although it may not seem like it now, summer is indeed winding down. For a lot of people, that means the end of the camping season and putting their RV in storage.

I am not going to discuss how to winterize here, instead we will talk about how to properly store an RV and products that will help achieve this goal.

Covers are a very popular method of protecting a stored RV. Sun, wind and debris can all wreak havoc on rubber roofs, seals and even the finish. A cover will help keep your RV out of the elements while still allowing it to breathe and maintain its value.

If a complete cover is not what you’re after, consider an air conditioner cover and appliance vent screens. Critters somehow manage to find their way into AC units (I have actually seen a squirrel in a squirrel cage) and covering it up is an inexpensive way to prevent a costly repair. Along with that, having screens that cover your refrigerator and furnace vents will keep those rascally rodents and buzzy bees from nesting in your home away from home.

Closing your RV up tight seems like the logical thing to do, but it can actually cause you problems. If the air inside becomes damp, there is nowhere for that moisture to escape. An inexpensive and easy remedy for this is to install vent covers. We carry models from Maxx-Air and Camco that are simple to install and will allow the roof vents to remain open while keeping the outside, well…outside. Doing this will allow for some air movement and will keep moisture down.

We put our tires through all kinds of abuse. They get exposed to sun, sand, mud, dirt and what ever happens to fall on the ground. We can help them last longer by covering them when the RV is in storage. We have Tyre Guards in a multitude of sizes and configurations to cover almost any RV tire, including your spare.

These are just a few things you can recommend to your customers to make their life better in the long run. Next time, we will discuss some of the things you can do to prepare the inside of the RV for the storage ahead!

Don't Overshadow
John Feasel

In our travels to different store locations, one of the things the SMART team looks at is the lighting and brightness of the product on the aisles and wall area.  One of the things we often see is extra stock stored on a shelf above the product’s home.  While this may keep the product visible so store personnel can keep refilling the peg or shelf, it puts an undesirable shadow on the product below the shelf.  This shadow can take away from the bright colors of the packaging or even the details of the product itself.  If you have this challenge, our suggestion is to first set your maximum amount to buy to the holding power that your peg or shelf area can hold.  If you need more stock than a peg or shelf area can hold,  you might want to double up the facing. Also, if an item has a fast turnover rate, you may consider closing out a slower-selling item to allow more space for this faster-selling unit.  You can then take those items that you need to sell down and put them behind your counter or in your backroom. Remember to make sure your sales team has a daily list that includes filling in these items.  We have even seen one company put a red dot on the shelf label so the store personnel know to fill in these items from the back room rather than ordering more of these items when the peg or shelf area is empty.  You may also be able to take these items and create a contest so store personnel will sell them quickly.

Lighting not only showcases the items that customers may need, but it also showcases your store and sets the atmosphere.  Dark, dreary stores feel closed in, whereas customers feel like they are welcomed in a light and bright environment.  Parts staff is also able to up-sell and assist customers in finding just the right part or accessory if the labels are easily located and properly stocked.

Battery Maintenance
Dan "Ray" Hofer

Every camping trip seems to have those minor issues that aren’t trip killers, but are a nuisance nonetheless. A burned out light bulb, a broken mini-blind, forgetting to pack clean pants; these can all make things a little challenging, but may not send you home.  We had a great weekend planned at a little campground on the Santiam River.  Hanging out by the fire, drinking ice cold beverages and burning steaks were all on the agenda…well, except for the steak part, that wasn’t planned.

Unfortunately, it rained. Not a lot, but enough to not want to be in it. So, we would sit inside, play cards, eat nachos, and listen to music.
This is where the problem arises. I turn the radio on and get power but no sound. Being the person that I am, I immediately go in to fix-it mode. I disassembled the radio and found nothing. Out to the batteries I go!  I pull the battery box covers off and the problem is staring at me in all of its green, fuzzy glory! Yup…corrosion! It was just on one terminal, but it was the positive terminal that has all of the primary wiring attached to it. I removed the wing nut, separated all of the connectors, which were stuck together, and cleaned them off. Once I got everything connected, the lights were brighter and I could finally listen to Justin Beiber.

My point is that a little preventative battery maintenance would have saved me some grief. I had gotten out of the habit of checking them before every trip and it came back to bite me. The terminals and connectors should be corrosion- free and make a good connection. We carry battery cleaner by both Noco (13-0605) and Krylon (13-0590)

that will dissolve and neutralize any corrosion that may have accumulated. Once that is done, you can apply some corrosion preventer, also from Krylon (13-0591) or Deka (13-0582), to keep it from happening again.

The other, and often overlooked, maintenance requirement of a battery is water level. They need to be full of water to operate properly. Popping the caps off and filling them with distilled water will help them hold their charge. If there isn’t easy access to the batteries, a watering system may be just the thing. Pro-Fill makes a kit designed for RVs with a pair of 12V batteries that allows them to be filled from a single point; it is part number (19-0702).

Needless to say, a quick battery inspection and some necessary maintenance before each trip can prevent a lot of problems and keep campers happy, rain or shine. Now, can anyone help me figure out where these extra screws go?

Tech 101 - Backup Power Can Save The Day
Dan "Ray" Hofer

My family and I spent Memorial Day weekend dry camping in central Oregon’s high desert. On the last night of our trip, my wife went to bed and left the porch light on for me. When I went to settle in, I failed to notice the light was on. I place the blame on the campfire smoke in my eyes and too much cream soda.

Sometime during the night, I noticed the furnace fan was running at a very low speed and no heat was coming out. I did a quick check of the battery level and it wouldn’t even register 10 volts. Yup, the batteries were d-e-a-d dead. I shut the furnace off and went back to bed.

I assessed the situation the next morning and realized that everything in my trailer had shut down, including the refrigerator, so it was critical for me to get things up and running again.

Situations like this can happen all the time. To avoid wrecking camping trips with small things like no lights, no tunes and rotten turkey sandwiches, your customers need back-up power.

Solar panels and generators come in handy when dry camping. An off-the-grid power source needs to be able to supply enough power to accommodate your customers’ needs, whether it be charging batteries or powering their entire coach. Solar can be very simple or very complex. If your customer wants to completely live off the grid and run their air conditioner, they’re going to need a large bank of batteries, a large inverter and lots of heavy gauge wiring. In a quick power need situation like mine, a generator might be a more suitable option.

Things to consider:

• How much power do you need?
• Are you just charging batteries or running 110v appliances as well?
• Can you run a generator where you are? Many campgrounds have noise limits and some generators exceed those?
• Is it fire season? You may not be able to run it then either.
• How will you transport the generator?
• If you’re going for solar, how much wattage/amperage do you need to recover?
• Do you have space for extra batteries and enough room for solar panels on your roof?

Fortunately for me and my turkey, I was able to salvage the remainder of my trip with a portable generator. Having the right equipment can keep a good vacation from going bad.

SMART Team visits Alpin Haus Priority RV Parts Store in Amsterdam, NY

As merchandising experts, the SMART team is called upon to recreate a retail friendly, easy-to-shop, easily-to-maintain and easy-to-inventory retail parts stores. This was the case for the retail parts store for Alpin Haus in Amsterdam, New York. Alpin Haus was taking their existing warehouse sized parts and accessories store and downsizing to a more customer friendly, less overwhelming retail environment. The SMART team worked closely with the parts personnel to merchandise and organize the store that would meet not only the retail customers needs to find exactly what they needed to get back enjoying their adventure, but that would also allow the staff to quickly restock, reorder, and manage the inventory. Since the completion of the Alpin Haus retail parts store redesign, the SMART team has returned and followed up with the sales team and can see that with the merchandising techniques that they employed and the inventory management systems that have been in place, the store is excelling and is just one more asset to not only Alpin Haus, but to the NTP Distribution’s SMART team’s resume of success stories.

"I would urge any RV dealers that are considering revitalizing their retail store to call NTP's SMART Team for a consultation. With more than 18 years in the RV retail business, I've seen and heard what other distributors have to offer and none compare to the features and benefits offered by the SMART Team. NTP's retail professionals will leave you with a modern, well stocked store that practically runs itself. Their SMART team will go out of their way to accomodate your special requests and tailor your store to your specific needs. Their philosophy is to give you a viable, sellable inventory and not load you up with a ton of product that's just going to sit on your shelves."

2011 NTP Vendor Awards.

NTP Distribution has recognized the top vendors of the year at their annual dealer conference in Palm Springs, CA.

"The vendors selected for the top-tiered awards were not granted this level of prestige based on sales volume but rather true partnership with NTP and support in training to sales consultants and NTP’s dealer partners," said Cathy Sutton, senior vendor relations manager for NTP.

Vendor of the Year

Vendor of the Year -- DEMCO.

DEMCO has been manufacturing products for the RV Industry since 1982. They have a full line of tow products ranging from KarKaddy, Victory Series Towbars and Glide Ride. NTP and DEMCO have been in partnership for the last three years.

DEMCO has proven time and again that they are partners in the truest sense of the word," said Sutton. "They have provided exceptional training to our entire sales force and have worked diligently with NTP to provide exceptional products and service to our dealers in the market place.

Best Vendor Support

Best Vendor Support -- Winegard.

Winegard Company has been manufacturing television and radio reception products for more than 50 years. One of their four key segments is the RV industry where they provide mobile television reception products. In 2010 Winegard provided exceptional vendor support to NTP Distribution through innovative package promotions for NTP’s dealer partners as well as rebates for customers.

"When a company like Winegard and NTP create promotions together they see outstanding growth not only in sales but through customer loyalty and education” said Sutton.

Best New Product

Best New Product in 2010 -- Flip Jack Foot by Progress Manufacturing.

The Flip Jack Foot eliminates the hassles of storing and stacking wood blocks or finding a place to store a removable extension. There is no kneeling on the ground because no springs, cables or pins are required. It bolts quickly and easily to existing jacks, providing an automatic 6-inch extension that locks into place when extended, and folds up out of the way when retracted.

Other than being an innovative product, Flip Jack Foot was selected as best new product based on the comprehensive go to market strategy that Progress Manufacturing developed” said Sutton. “We look for products in this category that are unique and fill a gap in the market, but we also need support from the brand to help educate the customers on why they need this product. The Flip Jack Foot fit that requirement completely.”

The following suppliers were also honored by NTP with an achievement award for outstanding support and partnership in 2010:

  • Camco Manufacturing
  • Roadmaster
  • Carefree of Colorado
